When the 12v LED light fixture first came out, they were often poor quality. The little bulbs would quit working or start to flicker annoyingly. Now, however, 12 volt LED lights have come a long way as to quality and endurance. Not only that but they come in all shapes and sizes and are available for all sorts of applications. Pretty much any type of light bulb can be replaced with an LED light — like tubes, canisters, standard light bulbs (and not so standard), Christmas lights and even 12v waterproof light strips. Basically, you can light up anything anywhere with LED lights.

But why would you want to use LED light bulbs?

When we first moved off the grid 20+ years ago, the best option for light fixtures for our off-grid house were fluorescent lights. This is because they use a lot less electrical power than a ‘normal’ light bulb used in lamps. But then, the 12v LED light fixture became available. We bought a few little ones to give them a try at first. We were surprised how bright they were. And then we noticed how very little power they used. We could leave one on all night and it barely affected our solar battery bank. So, we bought some more LED lights and now we rarely run out of power before heading to bed. Before we would need to stock up on candles to be used when there wasn’t enough battery power. Not anymore!

We also live in a partial off-grid home, and decided to change all our fluorescent tube lights to LED tube lights. What a difference in our power bill! When we are gone from that house for a month or two (to go live in our fully off-grid house), we unplug everything in the house and only have four security lights on outside all night long. When we had fluorescent lights our power bill was typically around 60 KWh/month. Then, I thought there was an error in our electric bill after we had changed all the light bulbs to LED. Now our power bill is only around 17 KWh/month when we are gone! So worth it!
